The name Japan means “origin of the land” or “land of the origin of the land”. Japan is made up of about 6,852 islands of volcanic origin. The four largest islands are Honshu, Hokkaido, Shikuku and Kyushu, which occupy about ninety-seven percent of Japan’s land area. It has the tenth largest population in the world – about 127 million people. The Japanese make up 98.5% of the total population of Japan. The population of the capital, Tokyo, is about 8.7 million people. The first mention of Japan is found in Chinese historical texts, which date back to the first century.
